Dinkelsbuhl, Nordlingem, and Ulm

Today is a day of pictures.... We took a ride on the Romantic Road, up through Bavaria to see medieval villages and walled cities... Everything is as cute as a bug's ear...

If you can't go around it, go under it...
It's all old and beautiful...

The White Tiger!

Nordlingen...

Ulm, home to the tallest church in the world, and for hundreds of years, one of the tallest buildings in the world...

On the way back to Augsburg, we encountered some construction on the highway... The first time, the navigation system offered me a "diversion"... I accepted it and we were off on little roads through the countryside that felt like I was driving in Disneyland... No other cars and impeccable country roads winding through hills where I could zip around through farmer's fields as the winter wheat was rising and crop planting was abundant.  The Germans rotate crops so as not to ruin the soil, as the Americans did in the Midwest which caused the great dust bowl.  The last "diversions" were rejected, but we found ourselves sharing the autobahn with oncoming traffic... separated by a flimsy looking barrier.  For a while, I was holding my own dealing with oncoming traffic at 75mph a few feet to my left.  Then I moved to the right side with the trucks....  I realized I had two choices: tension or stress.  Go slow or risk death.  Well, you all know which one I picked... White knuckle it else I would have to go slow stuck behind the lorries!

We made it home, and treated ourselves to a platter of spaeztle (a favorite German dumpling pasta) with three local cheeses, served piping hot, covered in fried onions, and a great German salad with hausedressing to offset the delicious (what I assume is) 14% butterfat in the dish.  The gelato of pastas!
