A lovely day in Verona. The inner city is full of luxury stores, and the main plaza was set up with dozens of vendors selling local foods, olive oils, etc. The Milan Expo 2015 is this week, so hundreds of thousands of visitors to the region are here for Italy's annual design extravaganza.
Loaves of bread, big enough to feed a small country.
True licorice, a favorite of mine.
Cheese, wheels and wheels of it... Smelled so good...
Herbs and spices galore...
Handsome vendor...
The Arena was built between 14 and 54 AD. It is still used for operas throughout the summer. It is elliptical and the common people entered on the long sides, while the nobles entered on the round sides.. Gladiators come alive in your mind!
Much of the original outer structure which served as the flying buttress was removed in the Dark Ages to build the City... we don't know why this piece was left...
San Zeno... A Saint born in 300 AD in Mauritania, and died in 371 AD. His feast day and procession is celebrated on April 21... Patron Saint of Verona, fisherman, and newborn babies...The Bronze front doors to the church are 30 feet tall...
Verona is also a city of bridges.
Arch, from Roman times, same as the Arena...
BFFs
One of the more Western cities ruled by Venice (the winged Lion tells us this)
Roman Fortress...
And the house of Romeo and Juliet... all fabled, and they've had to replace the wall where love notes were stuck in the wall with more modern walls for love graffiti...
Just say No to TripAdvisor!
And our local neighborhood in Asolo again... It came Alive last night... Fortunately we dined early at 8pm before all the well-heeled came out to dine...
Off to the Cittadella today and a dinner at Il Pavone in Romana D'Ezzoleni....
